Scientifically Supported Health Benefits of Turmeric
1. Joint comfort — the best-studied area
An umbrella meta-analysis of eleven separate meta-analyses found that standardised curcuminoid supplements significantly reduced pain and improved function in osteoarthritis [1]. In the largest single trial, 367 patients with knee osteoarthritis took 1,500 mg of Curcuma domestica extract daily for four weeks; it performed as well as 1,200 mg of ibuprofen, with fewer gastrointestinal side effects [2]. These trials used concentrated extracts, not fresh rhizome.
2. Inflammation markers
A meta-analysis covering 23 randomised trials found curcumin supplementation reduced high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, a standard marker of low-grade inflammation. The effect was stronger at doses below 2,000 mg per day than above [3].
3. Blood lipids
A GRADE-assessed dose-response meta-analysis of 64 randomised controlled trials found reductions in total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol, and a small rise in HDL. The authors rated the overall evidence quality as low and noted that the trials did not adequately account for supplement potency or purity [4].
4. Blood glucose
A dose-response meta-analysis of 34 randomised trials found reductions in fasting glucose and HbA1c, with efficacy modified by dose — one gram a day or more was more effective. Heterogeneity between trials was high [5].
5. Liver enzymes
An updated meta-analysis of 16 randomised controlled trials in people with fatty liver found reductions in ALT and AST [6]. The authors note that almost all of these trials were conducted in a single country, and that a third of the individual trials carried a high risk of bias.
6. Essential oils of the fresh rhizome
Fresh turmeric rhizome carries a distinctly different essential oil profile from the dried spice — turmerone accounts for roughly 60% of the oil in fresh material against under 7% in dried, where it converts to ar-turmerone [7]. Fresh rhizome oil and oleoresin have been measured as having higher antioxidant activity in laboratory testing than their dried equivalents [8].
